PROGRAMS
Over the last year we have witnessed
the game of hockey make some specific changes. Now more than ever, skating is a
major factor in a players ability to be successful. CHANGE IS THE PRICE OF
SUCCESS!
Diana Schaefering and Power Play Hockey have seen the needs of hockey
players to have a continuing education involving skating skills and have evolved its
program based upon those needs. Our new program is based on the theory of "ABS"
training----developing a foundation of AGILITY, BALANCE and STRENGTH ON SKATES.
In any sport, the best athletes are the ones who rely on a strong base of skills and
continue to reinforce, and build, on those skills. Our children spend their first 18 years
learning and developing. From grade K-12, their education is built upon what has been
learned the previous year and continues to grow with each consecutive grade. Most move on
to college, and for some, many years of specialized education follow. The process of an
athlete is no different. Continually educating the athlete in the skills they use in their
game is no different than the progressive education they receive in school. Unless they
are taught, and taught properly, we cannot assume they will gain those skills on
their own.
Power Play Hockey realized the need for more than a one week power skating
program, where a different skill is worked on each day. Our NEW PROGRAM
gives players the opportunity to learn, understand, feel and practice each part of every
skill. We wont just "scratch the surface", we will be "digging
deep" into the mechanics of every skill with drills that reinforce those skills. And,
with drill repetition, the players muscles are trained to react correctly and
automatically. As the players "Step Up" through the additional levels of
the program, this building process helps them gain confidence in their abilities. Drills
will become more difficult as we combine skills, the skating tempos become even faster,
and adding pucks while maintaining the learned mechanics add to the complete skill. This
is what the game of hockey is all about!

POWER SKATING SKILLS
LEVEL I

Initially all skills are taught slowly (learning the movement) and then
increased tempo is added as the skill improves and the player gains confidence (crawl,
walk, run concept). Give your players the advantage of learning how to use their
body correctly, understand the sequence of movement and gain confidence in their
abilities!
This condensed week long program will combine
skills from several of the “ABS” (agility, balance and strength on
skates) training series. Forward and backward skating, starting,
stopping and turning will be the curriculum for this set of skills.
Players of all skill levels will learn the newest and most efficient
advancements in skating. Emphasis is placed to address all learning
styles (hearing, seeing, doing, feeling). To do this, all skills are
taught slowly (learning the movement) and then increased tempo is added
as the skill improves and the player gains confidence (crawl, walk, run
concept). Elements scheduled to be covered:
-
Balance and Body Position Forward and Backward
-
Proper Knee Bend
-
Weight Shift and Weight Transfer
-
Proper Usage of the Skate Blade
-
Controlled Sequence of Movement
-
Plyometric Drills Forward and Backward
-
Forward Stride (three parts)
-
Proper Movement of the Arms in Stride
-
Forward and Backward Edges
-
Forward C-cuts
-
Balance and Defensive Body
Position
-
Backward C-cuts (Neutral
Zone Backward Skating)
-
Stick Position on Stops, Starts and Turns
- One
Foot Snowplow Stop (First Part of Hockey Stop)
-
Control Stop (Neutral Upper Body Position)
-
T-Stop (Second Part of Hockey Stop)
-
Defensive and Neutral Upper Body Positions for Stops
-
Weight Shift on Starts
- Open
“V” Start

CAMP TERMITE

This camp is
designed for the 3 to 7 year old Mini Mite who loves HOCKEY! These
little termites will receive 1.5 hours of ice time daily with
instruction on skating skills, stick handling, passing, shooting and fun
and games! After the on ice session, players will get dressed, pack up
their gear, and eat lunch (lunch is provided daily). Friday’s session
will be an “official scrimmage”, putting together the skills developed
throughout the week and a chance to show Mom and Dad how much they have
learned. Full equipment is required, including mouth guards. To maximize
each player’s learning potential, there are five students per
instructor. Our goal is to create a structured learning environment that
enforces discipline yet encourages these young players to gain proper
skills along with a strong sense of confidence. But the number one goal
is to have fun while learning!

POWER
SKATING SKILLS LEVEL II

Our Level II program builds on the skill development outlined in Level I. Each skill previously learned will be taken to the next level with more complex and challenging drills, higher tempo work and maintaining speed and control with the puck. Forward crossovers, lateral movement and transitions will be added to the curriculum. Players will be challenged to push beyond their “comfort zone” to elevate the level of their play. New elements to be covered:
- Angle/Arc (stair-step)
concept
- Body/Stick position
- Inside and Outside Edge
“thrust” on crossovers
- Awareness of blade usage
while crossing
- Staying “square” while
moving laterally
- Crossing quickly and
effectively
- Maximum thrust from proper
weight shift
- Three step method on front
to back transitions
- Backward to forward
transition
- Maintaining speed while
transitioning
- Transitions direct line and
on curves

ACCELERATED BANTAM AND HIGH SCHOOL SKILLS

Players will be
challenged to go beyond their “comfort zone” using drills designed for
agility and balance while mastering technique for maximum efficiency.
Full speed and over-speed will then be stressed while maintaining proper
execution. Bungee cords and parachutes will enhance strength training,
resistance and over-speed work. Once technique and strength have been
addressed, game like situations with the puck is added, allowing for
maximum development for total skating performance. Full equipment is
required.

POWER SKATING
AND STICK HANDLING

Players will be
challenged daily with 45 minutes of power skating skills and 45 minutes
of stick handling development. This combined program will focus on a new
skill each day, giving the player a short “overview” of each skill or,
if having taken an earlier program, helping to reinforce the skill
previously learned. It is perfect for the player looking to enhance
their stick handling skills while developing and maintaining proper
skating technique.
